The Kurdistan Foundation, through its environmental entity Climate.KRD, officially launched the second phase of its Recycle Bin Project at the Zakho Corniche, on June 4, 2026 expanding efforts to promote sustainable waste management and reduce plastic pollution across the Kurdistan Region.
The launch builds on the success of the project’s first phase, during which 500 recycling bins were installed across Erbil and Duhok in 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen recycling infrastructure, encourage responsible waste disposal practices, and increase public participation in environmental protection efforts.
The second phase includes the installation of 150 recycling bins throughout the Zakho Independent Administration. The project seeks to improve waste separation practices, reduce the burning and burial of plastic waste, and enhance environmental awareness among residents. The launch was strategically held one day before World Environment Day, underscoring the importance of sustainability and collective environmental action.
Speaking during the event, Gohdar Shekho, Supervisor of the Zakho Independent Administration, highlighted the significance of the initiative, describing it as an important step toward protecting the environment and supporting the continued development of Zakho. He emphasized the value of collaborative efforts between public institutions, civil society, and local communities in addressing environmental challenges.
The project responds to growing waste management concerns in the Kurdistan Region, where approximately 7,000 tons of waste are generated every day, with plastic accounting for nearly 25 percent of total waste. In Zakho alone, an estimated 300 tons of waste are produced daily, of which 7 to 8 percent consists of plastic materials. By expanding recycling infrastructure, the initiative aims to divert significant amounts of plastic waste from landfills and open dumping sites while contributing to more sustainable waste management systems.
According to project estimates, the newly installed recycling bins are expected to collect more than 125,000 plastic bottles each month, equivalent to over three tons of recyclable plastic waste. The initiative is also projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 33 tons annually, generating long-term environmental benefits and supporting climate action efforts in the region.
The Recycle Bin Project forms part of Climate.KRD’s broader environmental strategy, which focuses on combating plastic pollution, promoting environmental awareness, and encouraging community engagement in sustainable practices. Through a combination of infrastructure development and public education, the initiative seeks to foster long-term behavioral change and build a stronger culture of recycling across the Kurdistan Region.
Building on the achievements of its previous phase, the Kurdistan Foundation plans to expand the project to additional cities and institutions in the coming years. Through the Recycle Bin Project and other climate-focused initiatives, the Kurdistan Foundation continues to advance its commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and long-term community development.
